Book Riot is the largest independent editorial book site in North America, and home to a host of media, from podcasts to newsletters to original content, all designed around diverse readers and across all genres.
Our Mission
We’re dedicated to the idea that writing about books and reading should be just as diverse as books and readers are. We began with the goal of leading a new discussion around books, readers, and publishing. Individually and collaboratively, we do the work each day to innovate fresh content and services to our readers, amplify voices from marginalized and underrepresented communities, and challenge ourselves and our community to be inclusive.
Because we value diversity and representation, we set standards for hiring and editorial content with the aim of reflecting current North American census and population data, which illustrate a far more diverse world than might be presumed based on publishing numbers and statistics. When we can’t find enough authors from marginalized and underrepresented communities to meet these standards in our content, we take the opportunity to critically examine why this might be.
As of January 2023, 35% of Riot New Media Group’s staff are people of color, as are about 34% of Book Riot’s contributors. We are not satisfied with these numbers and are committed to continuing to work to make all aspects of the company more inclusive.
Due to the small size of our staff, we do not release additional demographic information in order to protect the privacy of staff members from marginalized and underrepresented communities and prevent unwanted inquiries and potential harassment.
